10 Link Obtaining Tips

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

Building links is a vital factor of online optimization of course, but what a lot of people fail to realize well or don’t realize is that obtaining links from certain sites won’t give you any credit. I see on the forums all the time people selling links that contain no value, but then 100 people buy them which granted its only a $5 dollar link, but there just things you need to look for and I’m going to cover some of them tips below.

  1. Unique Content, Take a look at the content and make sure its unique. If your wanting to find out if the content is unique just copy a few paragraphs off the site and the paste it into the Google search if a result comes back totally identically to what you pasted in the search box then its junk and a spammy website that carries no value what so ever.
  2. Outbound Links, Check the page for outbound links is there 500 outbound links, or 5 outbound links. The less outbounds the more value you will obtain for your website. Also if a websites got to many outbounds on it this is a sign of spam and no value on the site because generally when a site is identified as selling links it don’t contain any value, so move on.
  3. Relevant Content, Getting links from relevant content is powerful which granted links from non-relevant sites won’t hurt you but they probably will help (not as much), but if you can get links from websites that are 200 percent relevant then these are the links you want to get. I should say these are the links you should be chasing after, and links with then content are always the best, thats why contextual links are so powerful for because there place in a relevant paragraph thats related to you.
  4. Links Pages, Try to stay away from links pages if at all possible which granted you can get some bang from these if you get some links from valuable pages. For example if your offered a link on a links pages that has 100 outbounds and the whole website looks like a spam fest then stay away from it.
  5. Resources Pages, This goes for the same as above.
  6. Don’t Get Confused, Do not get confused when someone tells you they have a edu link keep in mind just because it has .edu on the end of it makes it no more special then a .com, .biz, .net, or any other domain extension. The only reason .edu and .gov links are talked about so highly is because they generally do carry more value because they come from sites such as colleges, and government sites that are high authority websites, but not all of them are.
  7. Reciprocal Linking, Stay away from recriprocal linking, obtain only one way unique links they are the best.
  8. Vary Anchor Text, You should always vary your anchor text and switch on and off between achor texts for example if your trying to rank fo real estate use long tails such as real estate services, Ohio real estate, more information on real estate, and etc. This keeps your link profile looking clean.
  9. Submit To Directories, Google even suggest this in there webmaster guidelines submit to quality directories.
  10. Avoid Automated Spam Programs, Avoid programs that are made to submit your website to directories automatically this will spam your site out and devalue your links.

The ideal behind link building is to obtain quality one way unique links. Nothing less, the better your links the better you will be with ranking. Theres not much to it, but you just want to make sure you keep that link profile clean so your ranking weight sticks.

Sitewide links

Friday, November 2nd, 2007

I have been playing around on the forums lately and I notice a lot of people have been asking about links and how people get so many or they think its going to be a lot of money to have so many links. The thing is generally when you see someone with 12k links or whatever it probably is not accurate more then 3/4 of them are probably not even unique.

When you see a site that has that many links its probably because of site wide links. When someone is given a site wide link on a website that has over 500 pages generally it will read as 500 links or less. Which your not being credited for every link what so ever. The search engines take each link from another website and then they start breaking it down for each link, so for example you have 200 links coming from another site whether its to different pages, or the same page all them links will be broken down, and then the total value will be added up, but if you only have one link coming from that site all the value will come from that one link, so it stays the same whether its sitewide, or one unique link.

This is exactly why unique links are so great to have 1 way links from unique sites are the best. So when you think about getting links get links from different websites that offer unique valuable content, so you have more credit to your website. I figured I’d clear this up because I see people getting confused about this all the time, and wondering why a site reads over 1 million links or something its because of site wide links thats it, give it a try go get s site wide link from a blog and watch your back links pop off like crazy if it comes from a large blog site it will.

Old Domains Work Better For Link Building

Friday, October 26th, 2007

Ever heard of the saying buy an old domain and build links into it. Well the reason being is because old domains always rank better, they are like gold in Google’s eyes. For example you have a domain that is dated back to 1999 and you build links into it the results of the links being built into it will have a better outcome then what building links into a new domain would. New domains hardly even rank I just registered a domain the other day that is brand spanking new and it has got a bunch links naturally, but its still not ranking for any of the anchor text which of course this is what new domains do.

Generally it takes a good 2-3 years for your links to become highly effective. Now doesn’t mean you can’t build links into a new domain and it won’t work, but it will just take a lot more work then what it would on an old domain. Thats why if you can find a domain that relevant to your business and it will work use it. Unless your really focused in on the branding of the domain which personally that would be me.

I have a client that does monthly link building with us and hes got a pretty old domain, but whats quite surprising is that he hardly built any links into his domain, but yet hes ranking for some very competitive key terms. Put it this way it shot from page 10 to page 1 with hardly any link building for a very competitive key term this is because his domain age is old. I also had another client that had a domain from 1996, and he has a page rank 3 domain, but yet hes ranking for some very high brand name keywords that are being searched for and he is currently the largest reseller for Hallmark Ornaments.

I was thinking the other day I wish I had all my old domains from 15 years ago that I registered I just pratically let them fall off the earth. If i would of had these domains I just could not imagine what they would be worth today I had one domain that was www.his.com I think thats what it was, I just remember having a bunch of short domains for websites I was playing around with, but I let the fall off.

If you have a chance of buying some old domains that have links into them and its related to your business model buy the domains and 301 redirect the whole thing to your website this should give your new domain some trust. I do know a few people that have done that I had one client 301 redirect like 5 of his domains he had that were super old that he was just setting on and he said he got excellent results from it, which I’d imagine so because they was all old domains and had links into them that was related to his company.

Building the Perfect Links

Monday, October 22nd, 2007

When it comes to link building the perfect links can be hard to find, but then again quite simple. I have been going back and forth today with my link builders on what I want done, and how I want it done. Well there response is it’s going to be hard, and I’m thinking to my self no its not going to be hard. The reason they think its going to be hard is because they have been focusing on another technique for other client website that they have, or I should say link building they have done in the pass. Ranking and Links

Monday, October 15th, 2007

You know I had an old time associate I guess you could say, well he called me up awhile back and was telling me he was ranking for certain keywords with out links. I’m thinking to my self ok, but then I told him if you can rank with out links then you got it made. He just kind paused and was like yea. I think he knew he was not ranking for anything with out links maybe  very non competitive keywords and he was probably only ranking for one keyword.

What types of links do you need?

Friday, September 28th, 2007

Link with then content are the best. They are natural looking, and pratically undetectable. Thats why contextual links are great! When you hire a link builder, or you build links you always want to focus on getting links with then content, or at least high editorial links if your buying them. Stay away from the spammy pages such as links page, resources pages and etc. Granted a few here and there may not hurt you, but having 900 links and thats all the links you have and there all coming from reciprocal links pages don’t expect to get all the value in the world from them if any.

How to know if your site has been penalized

Thursday, September 6th, 2007

I get questions all the time, or I see through out the active part of the web people asking me or other people is my site penalized because I’m not showing up for certain keywords, or they say I keep optimizing for certain keywords or maybe there rankings are altering up and down. Big majority of the time your site is not penalized if the rankings are moving up and down its because google is probably going through some algorithm changes, so your rankings are getting shifted.

Hours of Link Building and Promoting.

Monday, August 27th, 2007

I get a lot of questions how long does it take to establish a website and profitable search engine rankings. Like Where you can live off it and make high cash flow. This all depends on the circumstances of your background such as marketing education, SEO education, confidence, motivation, and there is numerous other factors involved. I think if every one established long hours and uses good sense they will succeed in somewhat a good time frame where its profitable and keep in mind you will find your self making a lot of mistakes on the way such as branding, lack of organization, and just straight out silly mistakes.
