How Content Creation can Help Your Site

Friday, February 19th, 2010

writingContent is king when it comes to the Internet. If you have a business website up and running, it won’t do you much justice unless it has great content (emphasis on great). A lot of businesses have websites created to enhance sales and traffic to their business, but this doesn’t always occur, and it’s because they don’t have the right content up. Their sites are filled with content that isn’t helping to advance the company. Simply having a website that is eye catching won’t be enough if it doesn’t have eye catching headlines. Creating quality content is the only way to boost the productivity of your site.

Bringing in More Traffic

Bringing in traffic to your website is the first step to enhancing your website’s presence — and the best way to do that is with content creation. You will need to do research to find keyword search terms that are relevant to your site. This is a form of search engine optimization that will help to bring in traffic. Putting keywords within your heading and within subheadings will also increase your ranking on search engines like Google and Yahoo!. So with the use of SEO techniques, your content will be able to increase the amount of visitors to your site, but if you don’t have quality content, your visitors will quickly leave your site. Your goal is to get them to come, stay and possibly come back. Then if things go really well, they could turn into buyers of your products and services.

Maximizing Website Conversions

Creating a landing page is one of the best ways to maximize site conversions. This form of content has a more salesy approach, so if your goal is solely to sell whatever it is you have to offer, even if it’s a free download or subscription — you can easily do so with a landing page. On a landing page, you must write content in a way that engages the reader. You write it as though you are personally creating it for someone specific. Use “you” and “your” to make the content more personal. Also, you will have to ease into the sell multiple times along the landing page, which is sometimes long — about 3-4 pages on a word document, but one long page on a website. It is very important that you ask the reader to take action. Landing pages are perfect for getting people to fill out forms, take surveys, purchase items/services, send an email or make a phone call, which covers just about every business’ desire. The call to action should be very noticeable and grab the reader’s attention. It can be within a box of a different color or highlighted in big red words. But before bringing visitors to your landing page, you will need to create content that is a bit less-salesy.

Turning Visitors into Repeat Visitors

With great content, you will be able to turn visitors into loyal readers. If you have a blog, this will increase traffic and make people come back to you time and time again. But you will need to ensure that the content you post up is engaging and informational. Creating such content will put your rankings higher on search engines because they see that it is a worthy site. Also, if you can make your content worthy of reading, you can bring in the potential for inbound links. If readers see that your content has great value they will link to your blog or specific post within their site, which could help to bring in visitors from their websites. Linkbait is one of the best things you can get out of content creation and is in fact one of the top priorities of many websites. If you own a business, this is your best bet for getting more people to your site and potentially increasing sales.

The content on your website should be as unique as possible. This means that you should avoid covering topics that have been overdone, unless you have a new spin on the subject. Add in an opinion that will setoff comments from readers that visit your site. Then engage with them to help motivate more people to comment. Also, you can try posting news articles related to your niche, this will keep people coming to your blog, especially if you’re one of the first to dish out the news.

On search engines like Google, your content is rated by keywords, keyword density, subheadings and the content itself. If you have a lot of people linking back to your site, then it will boost you up on search engines as well. Search engines are getting smarter and more advanced all the time and are now even able to sort out good content from the bad. If it sees that different websites are linking back to you, then it shows search engines that others think your content is King.

Content that helps to increase linkbait isn’t only good for getting high rankings, but it can also help for the marketing of your site. As you’re bringing in more traffic, you’re increasing the chances of someone buying from you. Bringing back the idea of the landing page, you can start off with a piece of content that goes over the facts of your company and the benefits and features that are offered to customers. After buying them with that, you can have a link that leads them to the landing page, which will lead to the call of action.

While you’re explaining the benefits and features of your website/company, it is important that you get your facts straight. First off, features shouldn’t get confused with benefits. For example, the features of a locksmith company could be that they offer 20 years of experience, high quality products and 24-hour services. Then for benefits the locksmith company could post that they have lifetime warranties on locks and keys, low prices and 30-minute maximum wait times. Once you have shown the benefits and features of your company, you will easily sell them with a landing page.

How to Influence Your Readers for Links

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

It’s true that it takes great link building and linkbait to increase website traffic and rankings from search engines, but how you go about doing it will determine how successful you will be. A lot of folks aren’t sure if they should reciprocate links, buy links or simply earn them. Then there are some who use software to do all of the management for the link building process instead of doing it manually. What everyone should be doing is figuring out a way to win readers over and influence them in a way that will make them want to link back to your content.

Get People Interested

People aren’t just going to link to your website because you want them to — you’re going to have offer them something in return…valuable content. When creating your content, you will need to focus on writing about something that is interesting and/or of great use to your readers. Your readers must gain something from linking back to your site — this could be that you bought or traded something in exchange for a link. Or it could be that you offered content that was valuable enough for them to want to share it with their own readers. If you will be contacting site owners about a link, you will need to have in mind what it is that you have to offer them in return. If the only benefit you have in mind is for your own site, then you’re better off not making that request at all.

Make Your Readers Feel Important

This doesn’t mean you have to kiss the butts of your readers, but you should offer compliments and make them feel worth-while. You can do this by offering positive comments on a certain article or resource from someone’s site — afterward you can politely request for a link from the individual and have a higher chance of being rewarded. When a site owner sees a post about their website and/or content, it shows that you’ve spent enough time on their website to know that they area good match and it will make them feel important.

Use Names When Relevant

Once you have a specific site owner in mind, get to know the individual before addressing them. If you can get their name or pseudonym, you can use that within your post. This is like pointing a spotlight at the intended target, which they may enjoy. Everyone likes exposure. To find the names of the site owners, you can just search around their website for contact information of the editor. Most of the time, you will find their name within the email (julia.burns@website.com), if not, you may have to email them to obtain that information.

Approach Your Posts with Your Readers’ Perspective

Since you are asking your readers to go out of their way to link to your site, you will need to try to see things in their perspective. Before creating or sending out a link request, you will need to keep in mind the perspective of the reader, so put yourself in their shoes. If someone came to you asking for a link, would you jump right to it and accept the request? On the other end, if the requester took the time to look over your site and politely and personally contacted you about an article post that you could really share with your readers, you’d probably be more willing. With that in mind, you can begin crafting your request for a link from a site owner and probably be successful.

Building Relationships

While you’re steady link building, the real process at hand involves building relationships. This is sometimes automatically done when linking up with other sites in your category. Other times you’ll need to work at building these relationships. Linking is a whole lot like endorsing. By linking a site on your web page, it’s like telling a friend about a shop, service or product that you’ve recently used and liked. Now, this doesn’t mean that you should make requests by sending out dozens of emails to random folks about your site. This is like going to a party and giving flyers to any old body and asking them to tell all of their friends to buy your product or service. Sure, you might get one or two sales, but this isn’t the best route to go.

Your quest is to build good quality links that will eventually lead to great relationships. You can create these relationships through the use of email, blogs and discussion forums. When it’s relevant, you can make requests for links, but make sure to respect their opinions and their time once you’ve made the request. With this method, you may not see an overload of inbound links overnight, but you’ll soon see a steady flow of quality links, without all the work and hassle of just sending out emails to any and everyone.

Using Blogs to Engage with Readers

If you don’t already have one on your site, consider building a blog and using it to communicate with your readers. Posting up topics that are worth discussing will make people want to visit your site often. If any of them happen to be site owners they are more likely to link back to your content. To ensure that the right people are finding your content, make sure to implement keywords that relate to the blog post. Sometimes, it is better to create post titles that have keywords that are more likely to be punched into search engines, rather than choosing a heading that is solely based on relevance. Do your research to ensure that the keywords you have chosen are relevant and rich as well.

How to Make Your Content Viral

Wednesday, February 17th, 2010

Now, that you have your website and/or blog up and running, getting visitors to come and come often is your next battle. In order to make your site one of the most visited and respected on the Web, you will need to create viral content. Creating viral content is a make or break situation. You’ll need to develop text that isn’t just filled with keywords, but that is filled with great quality. A lot of people make the mistake of creating content based solely on old SEO techniques. With link building, you will be able to create linkbait that will generate you more traffic than you can image — that’s if you do things the “write” way.

Creating Quality Linkbait

If you’re looking for your content to be viral, you will need to create content that is worthy of linking to. Whatever niche you’re in, you’ll need to know who your targeted audience is and write towards them. Now, there are a variety of ways that you can create linkbait — first off, you need to ask yourself, why people would want to link to your content. Are you sharing valuable information, newsworthy pieces or educational facts? Maybe you’re content is more entertainment based — no matter what niche you’re in, you’ll need to make it so that people must link to your site on their blogs and websites. The time you put into your blog is what will show through your posts. If you rush through it and it isn’t your best work — you won’t see any grave improvements. Low quality equals low traffic. Would you put links in your blog to poorly written or irrelevant content? Likely not.

Who Will Bite Your Bait?

Okay, so you’ve figured out what you want to write about on your site, but do you know your angle? General posts are good, but specialized posts are great. Who exactly are you writing for? If you can narrow down who your audience is and specifically target them, you will be able to draw them in easier. Those searching for the type of content you have will find you easily and are more likely to bite your bait. Having just keywords without carefully thought out content may get you views, but this isn’t your goal. Your goal is to bait in potential inbound links from a particular online population.

Your best bet is to get your links posted up on sites like Digg, Technorati and Reddit. A lot of people are able to spam their way up on these homepages, either through overloads of keywords and links, but if the site isn’t worthy enough it won’t receive any linking love. The amount of Diggs your post receives or how popular it becomes isn’t what you should base your success upon. Articles that have received a lot of hits doesn’t always receive good link volumes. There have been instances where articles that aren’t popular have received more linkbait and others that are popular that don’t receive one single inbound link.

Time Sensitive Content

If your focus is on delivering newsy articles, the shelf-life of the content is limited. Time sensitive pieces require quick creation, without sacrificing quality. Your best bet is to get on Digg or Reddit or any other social news media home page. Create content that is great and full of facts that has been properly researched. If your work isn’t credible or has wrong facts, you will soon gain a bad name for yourself, so make sure to search around for the facts before posting up. Also, the quicker you can post up newsworthy content, the more likely you will attract more link love. There are plenty of bloggers and site owners out there that are looking for breaking news and will link back to the sources they have found. If you can be one of the first, if not the first, then your chances are a whole lot higher.

There is even a chance that someone may see your post for the first time on a social media site and like it so much that they decide to follow your posts. With this in mind, make sure that you create all of your posts like it is your first. Don’t allow your content to deteriorate over the remainder of your posts because you could end up losing fans. Also, make sure that the sites you post your article to will do justice for you. Use social news sites for your newsworthy content and for your informational articles, you can use sites that offer a lot of posts within your niche; this way you know for sure the social media website already has the online population that you’re looking for. If you’re posting up academic material, Digg isn’t your best bet. Also, don’t just stick with your usual social media sites (Digg, Reddit, Netscape, Newsvine, Technorati, etc), try to branch out to others — the more the better.

Motivations for Linkbaiting

There are a couple of motivations that people have for content sharing. The top reason people share content is for self-expression. By allowing visitors to express themselves using social share buttons and comment threads, your audience is able to provide more engagement with your content. Viewers like to express their beliefs and interests related to posts, so if you can push this motivation, do so.

Another motivation for content sharing is to feed the need to feel like they are a part of something. Through communities, they are able to fulfill this desire — this is especially so if they are in a community that has a niche they are dominant in. Another reason to be more niche specific. One of the best motivations out there is for altruism. When a viewer sees content, such as a report that raises awareness about a community problem, sharing the content will make users feel like they’ve done the right thing for the cause.
